I’m J Smiles, comedian, Alzheimer’s and Dementia activist, and family caregiver. You may know me from Parenting Up™, where we’re a family of caregivers taking care of our family members together. Welcome to P.U.B. the Parenting Up Blog.

Don’t you just love small talk? For those of you who don't know, small talk is basically that sometimes awkward conversation that is produced to fill that awkward silence. There isn’t much strategy or designated topic points to small talk. For the most part, it’s never too deep or too personal; nothing that you would need to discuss with your therapist. It’s typically light conversation around the weather, meals, holiday traditions if it’s that time of year. It’s almost always initiated while waiting for something. In the line at the store, on an elevator, even on the phone with a customer service rep as they’re waiting on your account to load! You can say that small talk is inevitable. So here’s what I think, if small talk is bound to happen, why not make it as pleasant as possible? You never know, your words may be the thing that makes someone's day. I understand that it may not always be at the ideal moment for you. But just smile through and stay positive. Life is about interacting with others and being connected with grace and kindness. You never know what someone else is going through. They won’t always know what you’re going through. That’s why it’s always a great thing to treat others the way you want to be treated.
