“Surprise a Caregiver, Shock yourself!”
I’m J Smiles, comedian, Alzheimer’s and Dementia activist, and family caregiver. You may know me from Parenting Up™, where we’re a family of caregivers taking care of our family members together. Welcome to P.U.B. the Parenting Up Blog.
I’ve learned that it’s always best to be prepared for any situation. Of course, you can’t be prepared for something that you don’t see coming. But if it’s something that you have previous knowledge of, being prepared yields the best results. There’s some people who are “on the whim”, “take it as it comes” people. But if you’re like me, I like to prepare for what's to come so I can show up my best. Being the best that I can be has always been something that was instilled in me since I was a young girl. My parents raised me that it’s best to go into a situation armed with the tools and information needed. There’s an unmatched level of confidence that goes along with that as well. When you show up and you’re informed and know what’s going on, not only will you be more confident, but more comfortable as well. The comfort will transcend beyond you, and people will feel that. You will radiate that because that’s what you will be. So, when you know there’s something that you must show up for, do so by being prepared. Do so by being ready for whatever may come up. Don’t dim your light, don’t cheat yourself out of the opportunity of being the best in the room.
