“Double Duty: Caregiving & Working at the exact same moment!”
I’m J Smiles, comedian, Alzheimer’s and Dementia activist, and family caregiver. You may know me from Parenting Up™, where we’re a family of caregivers taking care of our family members together. Welcome to P.U.B. the Parenting Up Blog.
Unfortunately, the art of conversation is slowly becoming a thing of the past. Don’t get me wrong, it’s putting up a great fight. It’s hanging in there! So, actually, I won’t declare it the loser just yet. But, it is becoming less popular, especially among the younger generations. Personally, I love listening. And not just listening, but actually comprehending what others are saying. That’s what made me a fantastic lawyer! So, ask yourself, are you only listening? Or are you comprehending what is being said? There’s a difference. When I think of someone merely listening, I think of the phrase, “going in one ear and out the other.” When I feel as if that’s happening when I am talking to someone, I just stop talking. Because, what’s the point? Why explain yourself, or try to persuade someone to be interested in what you’re saying, if they’re not paying attention. What’s the reasoning behind speaking upon deaf ears? If you have an answer that makes sense, please let me know. As of now, there’s no reasoning at all. If you are a person who listens but doesn't comprehend, there’s no better time than now to evolve. To expand your mental awareness and understanding of not only yourself, but of the beauty and power in words. In comprehending and valuing what others say to you.
