“Can't Even Choose to Die with Dignity”
I’m J Smiles, comedian, Alzheimer’s and Dementia activist, and family caregiver. You may know me from Parenting Up™, where we’re a family of caregivers taking care of our family members together. Welcome to P.U.B. the Parenting Up Blog.
Have you ever considered fasting? Fasting is defined as the abstention from eating and sometimes drinking. From a purely physiological context, "fasting" may refer to the metabolic status of a person who has not eaten overnight, or to the metabolic state achieved after complete digestion and absorption of a meal. When I think of fasting, I think of not eating solid foods, which allows my body to clear the toxins from my system. It allows for my body to regenerate itself, and it boosts my immune system. Not only are there many physical benefits to fasting, but there’s plenty of mental and emotional benefits as well! That’s the holy trinity for you: mental, emotional, and physical. Within our one body, those three things are what make us who we are as humans. I’ve heard of people fasting for weeks, some only days. If you’ve never thought of fasting before, there’s no better time than now. Start with a day and build from there. Take note of how your body feels in every aspect. It could even be that when you start for the first time, you fail. But you tried! And you’ll try again, and eventually, you’ll succeed! Never give up on yourself. As I mentioned in a previous post, always show yourself grace.
