A Day In the Live with J Smiles

A Day In the Live with J Smiles

Can you imagine juggling a caregiving routine for a parent with Alzheimer's while preparing for a last-minute TV comedy appearance? That's the reality I faced as I navigated a whirlwind of chaos, laughter, and heartfelt moments. With help from my incredible teams, I managed to balance podcast production and the meticulous caregiving of my mom. Through all the craziness, I learned the vital importance of resilience, adaptability, and finding humor in the most challenging situations.

From the chaotic preparations to the serene moments of connecting with fellow comedians, this time was nothing short of an emotional rollercoaster. I share the behind-the-scenes antics that went into making the TV show appearance happen—think frantic late-night adjustments and last-minute logistical hurdles. But the real magic happened in the comedy green room, where I reconnected with the amazing Kelly Kellz and the legendary Cocoa Brown. I also met Palmer Williams for the first time.

Lastly, we explore the importance of trust, integrity, and authenticity in building relationships, both online and offline.

00:00:00.100 --> 00:00:05.822
So I look back over the last 36 hours and I say, ok, how did this all happen?

00:00:05.822 --> 00:00:08.105
Why did it happen?

00:00:08.105 --> 00:00:11.951
Shit, I don't know.

00:00:11.951 --> 00:00:13.595
I don't know.

00:00:13.595 --> 00:00:21.050
But what I do know is this I am a master of showing up.

00:00:21.050 --> 00:00:23.245
I show up.

00:00:23.245 --> 00:00:32.473
I might be sleepy, I might be late, I might not have any cash on me.

00:00:32.473 --> 00:00:39.313
I have been to Europe twice people with no wallet and no cash.

00:00:39.313 --> 00:00:40.880
How you get all the way to Europe?

00:00:40.880 --> 00:00:42.023
Jade, that's another whole thing.

00:00:42.023 --> 00:00:45.732
But you know, delta got the fly ready and digital, whatever.

00:00:45.732 --> 00:00:58.984
I showed my passport and they showed my face and got on the thing and I didn't have no, I mean no money, not one single US dollar bill, not even a debit card, and they don't have cash up in Europe.

00:00:58.984 --> 00:00:59.588
Did y'all know that?

00:00:59.588 --> 00:01:03.667
So nobody couldn't send me nothing.

00:01:03.667 --> 00:01:09.201
So anyway, I'm going.

00:01:09.201 --> 00:01:10.024
So nobody couldn't send me nothing.

00:01:10.024 --> 00:01:11.007
So anyway, I'm gonna show up.

00:01:11.007 --> 00:01:14.236
I might not have any money, I might be late, I might be a little sleepy, but I'm gonna be there.

00:01:14.256 --> 00:01:23.362
Parenting up, caregiving adventures with comedian day smiles is the intense journey of unexpectedly being fully responsible for my mama.

00:01:23.362 --> 00:01:33.611
For over a decade I've been chipping away at the unknown, advocating for her and pushing Alzheimer's awareness on anyone and anything with a heartbeat.

00:01:33.611 --> 00:01:40.006
Spoiler alert I started comedy because this shit is so heavy, so be ready for the jokes.

00:01:40.006 --> 00:01:48.647
Caregiver newbies, ogs and village members just willing to prop up a caregiver, you are in the right place.

00:01:48.647 --> 00:01:53.790
Hi, this is Zeddy.

00:01:53.790 --> 00:02:00.914
I hope you enjoy my daughter's podcast, is that okay?

00:02:00.914 --> 00:02:05.930
Today's supporter shout-out goes to Portia Bruner.

00:02:09.901 --> 00:02:20.929
Hey there, portia Bruner from the Portia Show, so excited to have an opportunity to brag just a little bit about one of my favorite and really the funniest bites that I know, ain't you?

00:02:20.929 --> 00:02:23.844
You already know Jay Smile?

00:02:23.844 --> 00:02:32.169
My goodness, this woman has been on the Portia Show, I think, 152,000 times and we only do 200 episodes a season.

00:02:32.169 --> 00:02:32.621
Wait a minute.

00:02:32.621 --> 00:02:33.866
Did I say only 200?

00:02:33.866 --> 00:02:39.269
Thank you so much for watching and thank you so much for supporting this venue.

00:02:39.269 --> 00:02:46.021
We want you to be seen, feel, heard, and that's why we bring women like J Smiles on the show, because she's not just funny.

00:02:46.042 --> 00:02:53.745
She's not just a comedian, but she's a caregiver and she's taking care of her mother and she's teaching us so many lessons.

00:02:53.745 --> 00:02:55.811
You've seen how this woman travels the world.

00:02:55.811 --> 00:02:57.747
Was she like a captain of a ship or something?

00:02:57.747 --> 00:03:02.365
At one point on some vacation she had a little hat on, looking like the captain.

00:03:02.365 --> 00:03:03.486
I was like what is this?

00:03:03.486 --> 00:03:04.990
What in the whole entire world?

00:03:04.990 --> 00:03:14.068
But that's why we love her, because she is living a really full and robust life and I'm happy to be a part of A Day in the Life with J Smiles.

00:03:14.068 --> 00:03:15.483
Woo, I'm for sure.

00:03:19.731 --> 00:03:22.228
A Day in the Life of J Smiles.

00:03:22.228 --> 00:03:32.348
This is one of those 36-hour periods that is real and is raw.

00:03:32.348 --> 00:03:36.250
This is caregiving in the fast lane.

00:03:36.250 --> 00:03:39.248
It's HOV, with one person in the car.

00:03:39.248 --> 00:03:42.578
You know you're driving so fast, the police not going to catch you.

00:03:42.578 --> 00:03:45.108
Yes, okay, not in this car, I mean like in my car.

00:03:45.108 --> 00:03:51.800
I'm not saying that, but yeah.

00:03:51.860 --> 00:04:03.432
So like when I woke up yesterday, sandy was having some more adverse reactions with her seizure medication.

00:04:03.432 --> 00:04:16.826
This has been going on for for like seven months at this point and I've been battling like in the trenches back and forth with the doctors, with the experts and with the primary care physicians, trying to let them know it ain't working.

00:04:16.826 --> 00:04:26.254
So there's a certain amount of anxiety that just lives with me whenever she's not good.

00:04:26.254 --> 00:04:31.690
Then there were meetings and there were schedules.

00:04:31.690 --> 00:04:44.661
My podcast production team and I scheduled two months in advance that today would be 10 hours of podcast recording like three or four episodes, and all this beautifulness, recording like three or four episodes, and all this good beautifulness.

00:04:44.661 --> 00:04:55.045
And then I get a wonderful opportunity to be on television with less than 24 hours notice.

00:04:55.045 --> 00:04:57.586
But hey, stay ready, you ain't got to get ready.

00:04:57.586 --> 00:05:03.189
And then, if you ain't ready, act ready, just act ready and put something on.

00:05:03.189 --> 00:05:07.091
Okay, my lip ain't on, but it'll be on after I get through eating this Power Bar.

00:05:07.091 --> 00:05:15.935
Thank you for the Power Bar that has something in it that I can eat that won't make me itch or belch so many Power Bars make me belch.

00:05:15.935 --> 00:05:17.156
Get on stage.

00:05:17.156 --> 00:05:17.896
I'm like.

00:05:17.896 --> 00:05:19.276
That doesn't work out.

00:05:19.276 --> 00:05:24.927
So then I was up all last night Like I slept like 50 minutes, like 5-0.

00:05:24.927 --> 00:05:33.411
And I don't even think that was quality If you could sleep quality, but I don't think I did, because I was getting Zeddy's schedule.

00:05:33.620 --> 00:05:38.699
It's the end of the month, so caregivers want to put in their time sheet.

00:05:38.699 --> 00:05:40.283
So y'all, y'all.

00:05:40.283 --> 00:05:45.088
I had caregivers texting me trying to make sure all their July dates are right.

00:05:45.088 --> 00:05:55.512
The care manager in me says, of course, please share it with me.

00:05:55.512 --> 00:05:57.165
Good to lie to me.

00:05:57.165 --> 00:06:05.350
The talent in me is like I'm trying to figure out how to be on TV tomorrow.

00:06:05.350 --> 00:06:20.646
Well, in 11 hours, 10 hours, 9 hours, 8 hours, okay, but I do want to hear what you have to say, because these are the people who care for my mama, right?

00:06:20.646 --> 00:06:41.504
I don't want to short over them or putting their needs and their requests secondary to my own, because you never know that one time you might be a little short, get a little slippy, could be the worst day of their personal lives and it's just crossing over.

00:06:41.504 --> 00:06:50.290
So I'm like you know what I mean, and we on the way up, we ain't all the way up.

00:06:50.379 --> 00:06:59.870
So the podcast production studio still has to be put together, assembled and disassembled about once every three and a half weeks.

00:06:59.870 --> 00:07:02.449
So probably assembly would take a process.

00:07:02.449 --> 00:07:06.389
And you know, on TV you can't wear what you want to wear.

00:07:06.389 --> 00:07:07.814
There are rules.

00:07:07.814 --> 00:07:10.927
You can't clash with the host.

00:07:10.927 --> 00:07:15.230
You can't clash with whatever the brand is of the network you're going with.

00:07:15.230 --> 00:07:18.249
You can't wear a brand name that hadn't been approved.

00:07:18.249 --> 00:07:28.425
Y'all know J Smiles, I was all about wearing white and a whole bunch of clashing fly colors and they're like yes, so don't do none of that.

00:07:34.528 --> 00:07:40.764
What am I wearing y'all and I can't just wear J Smiles' brand, because that's anyway.

00:07:40.764 --> 00:07:44.011
We out here, we out here.

00:07:44.011 --> 00:07:49.709
And then I was like, oh, oh, I also get a segment to do stand-up.

00:07:51.940 --> 00:07:59.163
Yeah, I'm going to say something that don't have nothing to do with the podcast that I'm also going to record today.

00:07:59.966 --> 00:08:16.374
Yeah, yeah, and Zay is good, and she didn't want me to go to bed and it's so hard, it's so difficult, if she's having a period of lucidness, for me to step away.

00:08:16.374 --> 00:08:24.146
And a couple times, around 1 am, she started trying to talk, first time in like a month.

00:08:24.146 --> 00:08:33.808
She was like it's the same as her saying my name, is that right?

00:08:33.808 --> 00:08:47.971
And I was like shit, I'm supposed to be finishing putting up a podcast or making sure I know what I'm going to say tomorrow.

00:08:47.971 --> 00:08:49.625
That's okay, mama.

00:08:49.625 --> 00:08:51.654
Yes, that's right.

00:08:51.654 --> 00:08:56.866
Whatever you say or thought you say, of course it's all right.

00:08:56.866 --> 00:09:00.553
It's all right.

00:09:00.573 --> 00:09:23.717
So, anyway, everybody who wonders how come it's so hard, jay, for you to RSVP Today.

00:09:23.717 --> 00:09:24.639
I had to cancel on myself.

00:09:24.639 --> 00:09:26.072
Do you understand that?

00:09:26.072 --> 00:09:30.407
That I cancel on myself and on the team that I'm playing when you cancel on yourself?

00:09:30.407 --> 00:09:40.544
That's what love, that's what living, and I'm so grateful for the opportunity to see local fans.

00:09:40.544 --> 00:09:46.187
This is just how we out here, we out here in the streets outside, in the streets outside of an open bank.

00:09:48.042 --> 00:09:55.206
If I had a penny for every time, I got the question Jay, how do you do it?

00:09:55.206 --> 00:10:01.145
How do you balance being a comedian and being a caregiver?

00:10:01.145 --> 00:10:13.307
How do you book gigs, how do you give speeches, how do you do this podcast and take care of Zeddy?

00:10:13.307 --> 00:10:19.735
First is divine intervention and a really close second.

00:10:19.735 --> 00:10:22.605
First is I have a phenomenal team.

00:10:22.605 --> 00:10:25.515
Like I'm not recording myself right now.

00:10:25.515 --> 00:10:33.273
There are people who are here assisting me and that's exactly what happened today.

00:10:33.273 --> 00:10:40.527
Like the last 36 hours have been completely impromptu.

00:10:40.908 --> 00:10:44.674
Nothing that I planned came to fruition.

00:10:44.674 --> 00:10:50.581
Prompt to Nothing that I planned came to fruition.

00:10:50.581 --> 00:11:06.678
Ten years ago hell, even three years ago, I would have been stressed and I would have been fighting it Like wait, I'm supposed to be doing A, b and C, mad Calling my best friend, trying to get an emergency session with my therapist.

00:11:06.678 --> 00:11:08.062
I don't know what's going wrong.

00:11:08.062 --> 00:11:08.764
I don't know.

00:11:08.764 --> 00:11:10.467
Is it God, is the universe?

00:11:10.467 --> 00:11:39.815
Is because I've dated that guy back and forth too many times and I wasn't right?

00:11:39.855 --> 00:11:44.177
First thing is is Zeddy remotely stable?

00:11:44.177 --> 00:11:50.322
And if she's remotely stable and I'm not in jail, that's just how bad.

00:11:50.322 --> 00:11:55.870
My life has hit rock bottom over and over again over this last decade.

00:11:55.870 --> 00:11:59.903
Plus that's my baseline, y'all I'm not worried about.

00:11:59.903 --> 00:12:01.426
Do I have some money?

00:12:01.426 --> 00:12:02.908
Did I pay my bills?

00:12:02.908 --> 00:12:06.955
No, is Zeddy alive and look stable?

00:12:06.955 --> 00:12:10.265
And am I physically free?

00:12:10.265 --> 00:12:12.230
And if that's the case.

00:12:12.230 --> 00:12:13.953
I'm like well, let me just keep it all going.

00:12:13.953 --> 00:12:20.326
What just happened was so beautiful.

00:12:20.326 --> 00:12:22.368
I can tell the story now.

00:12:22.368 --> 00:12:28.895
But the last 36 hours I was like I don't know when it's going on and I don't know why.

00:12:28.895 --> 00:12:39.414
But what I do know is, if I stop, that is doing a disservice to how many times the universe has held me up in the past.

00:12:41.220 --> 00:12:46.232
I know y'all like with J smiles enough with all of this generic rhetoric.

00:12:46.232 --> 00:12:47.644
What the hell happened?

00:12:47.644 --> 00:12:57.033
Ok, zeddy has Been diagnosed as being epileptic.

00:12:57.033 --> 00:13:07.434
Don't know if y'all knew this, but if you have two seizures within 24 hours or something, you are defined as epileptic.

00:13:07.434 --> 00:13:09.508
It doesn't matter if you don't ever have another one.

00:13:09.508 --> 00:13:20.533
Well, zetty had that about seven months ago and literally for the last six months her epilepsy medicine has been wrong.

00:13:20.533 --> 00:13:24.419
Not wrong according to the doctors, wrong according to J Smiles.

00:13:24.941 --> 00:13:28.510
I'm like my mama is walking around here looking like she on meth.

00:13:28.510 --> 00:13:32.524
That's not right.

00:13:32.524 --> 00:13:41.510
She's walking hunchback Looking like she's one of the people from Lord of the Rings.

00:13:41.510 --> 00:13:44.447
She's already five feet.

00:13:44.447 --> 00:13:49.484
So now if my mama is scrunched down to the point where she fold two, it's a problem.

00:13:49.484 --> 00:13:54.413
I call her name, I say mama, y'all.

00:13:54.413 --> 00:14:02.173
This is how she responds, staring off in the distance, looking like she's thinking about a lost loved one Maybe she is.

00:14:02.561 --> 00:14:03.524
All of that freaked me out.

00:14:03.524 --> 00:14:09.183
So I started pounding the doctors and I encourage you all to do the same.

00:14:09.183 --> 00:14:11.248
You know your LOs.

00:14:11.248 --> 00:14:17.884
I don't care if them people got PhDs, mds, lmnops.

00:14:17.884 --> 00:14:25.655
Who cares If your LO is worse after the medicine, f the medicine.

00:14:25.655 --> 00:14:34.549
So I've been fighting with these people and so 36 hours ago I started going round and round with the epilepsy.

00:14:36.013 --> 00:14:39.081
God, I guess he said.

00:14:39.081 --> 00:14:42.051
Well, I told you it was going to cause sedation.

00:14:42.051 --> 00:14:44.788
You just got to let her go through it for two weeks.

00:14:44.788 --> 00:14:47.044
On the other side of it, she'll be better.

00:14:47.044 --> 00:15:08.091
Sir, sir, I've been battling to keep my mama alive and now you want me, because of your little statistics and something that the FDA might have told you in grad school, to have her looking like she about to pass out.

00:15:08.091 --> 00:15:11.850
Her blood pressure skyrocketed but her sugar dropped.

00:15:11.850 --> 00:15:19.846
You know, old people can just fade into death because their heart rate get too low.

00:15:19.846 --> 00:15:21.529
I said let me tell you something.

00:15:21.529 --> 00:15:24.644
So y'all, I'm not, I'm not suggesting anybody else does this.

00:15:24.644 --> 00:15:33.849
But I wrote that man in my mama's, my chart and I said hey, you prescribe 20 milligrams, I'm giving her 10.

00:15:33.849 --> 00:15:46.333
And unless you call me back and say that me giving her 10 is going to kill her, thank you and have a good life, that me giving her a 10 is going to kill her.

00:15:46.333 --> 00:15:48.056
Thank you and have a good life.

00:15:48.056 --> 00:15:49.719
And now I'm waiting to see if my mama will be better.

00:15:49.820 --> 00:16:00.875
So all that was going on at the top of yesterday, and then today, my podcast team, two of the baddest chicks in the game Annalise and Mia.

00:16:00.875 --> 00:16:15.153
Annalise and Mia we took two months to plan where the three of us could get together and then I find out I could be on TV.

00:16:15.153 --> 00:16:17.177
They were like J Smiles we have a slot.

00:16:17.177 --> 00:16:18.400
We want to make it this.

00:16:18.400 --> 00:16:19.322
We want to make it fun.

00:16:19.322 --> 00:16:22.245
We need a comedian, not a character.

00:16:22.245 --> 00:16:28.995
We need a comedian that can come in off the cuff and riff with other comedians and somebody we can trust.

00:16:28.995 --> 00:16:30.402
Can you do it?

00:16:30.461 --> 00:16:34.732
I was like yes, of course, this is a call I got yesterday.

00:16:34.732 --> 00:16:37.522
Yes, of course, when Tomorrow?

00:16:37.522 --> 00:16:45.830
Shit, oh, first thing is that means I got to call my team.

00:16:45.830 --> 00:16:48.371
That means I got to quit on myself.

00:16:48.371 --> 00:16:50.994
You know what I mean Like psychologically.

00:16:50.994 --> 00:16:53.056
I got to stare myself up.

00:16:53.056 --> 00:17:05.353
I got to be a no-show to my own podcast production and I got to beg my folks, my producer and my videographer.

00:17:05.353 --> 00:17:21.125
You know that all that stuff we planned for two months and whatever you did in your life with all your friends, family, clients, manicure, pedicure, movies, dates, whatever, hey, can you move that?

00:17:21.125 --> 00:17:28.932
And while you're moving it, can you also come still be with me at the TV studio?

00:17:28.932 --> 00:17:40.253
And they were like, uh, hold on.

00:17:40.253 --> 00:17:42.173
They never said no To their credit, never said no, but I ain't going to lie.

00:17:42.173 --> 00:17:42.328
They didn't hold on.

00:17:42.328 --> 00:17:45.340
They never said no To their credit, never said no, but I ain't going to lie.

00:17:45.340 --> 00:17:53.494
They didn't answer as fast on the text messages as they usually answer, but that was valid, that's valid.

00:17:56.240 --> 00:18:03.314
But to prepare, watching my mama last night because y'all know I gave her a different medicine than what the doctor said.

00:18:03.314 --> 00:18:05.104
Ok, not a different kind, but a different dose.

00:18:05.104 --> 00:18:11.586
So I'm super watching her all night Because the caregivers are not responsible.

00:18:11.586 --> 00:18:14.092
I'm walking in and out of her room, I'm looking at her.

00:18:14.092 --> 00:18:29.065
I'm also setting up for whatever my podcast team would be able to do because spoiler alert they would normally be able to get to the studio and set up everything.

00:18:29.065 --> 00:18:31.329
I wouldn't have to do that.

00:18:31.329 --> 00:18:38.011
Okay, so I'm not a New York Times bestseller yet, but I do have a podcast team that sets up all the stuff for me.

00:18:38.011 --> 00:18:42.173
But hell, if I'm asking them to meet me at the studio, I can't also ask them.

00:18:42.173 --> 00:18:43.960
Well, hell, if I'm asking them to meet me at the studio, I can't also ask them.

00:18:43.960 --> 00:18:56.384
Well, if I'm asking them to meet me at the television station, I can't also expect them to be at the studio and set up for our podcast production, which is now gonna happen.

00:18:56.384 --> 00:19:00.806
It's gonna Start eight hours later than it was supposed to.

00:19:00.806 --> 00:19:02.267
You know what I'm saying.

00:19:02.267 --> 00:19:05.709
So I did it.

00:19:05.709 --> 00:19:10.932
Now the jury's still out on whether or not they're going to think I did a good job.

00:19:10.932 --> 00:19:19.597
So I'll tell you all about that in an outtake or a reel, because they may say you know what J Smiles next time you help the bear, because what you put together is trash.

00:19:19.597 --> 00:19:21.799
But I tried.

00:19:21.799 --> 00:19:36.890
So last night I put hours into setting it up and getting it right, hopefully, so we can get in and have a smoother Parenting Up podcast, our production of other episodes this evening.

00:19:38.872 --> 00:19:46.277
And then the television show, the Porsche show.

00:19:46.277 --> 00:19:48.278
They gave me directives.

00:19:48.278 --> 00:19:52.612
They didn't say tell this kind of joke, but I know her brand.

00:19:52.612 --> 00:19:55.588
I know her personally.

00:19:55.588 --> 00:20:03.288
I've come to know her because she went to Howard she's a Howard Bison and she told me what it would be about Like.

00:20:04.490 --> 00:20:26.991
And so now I got two minutes to try to come up with and these two television minutes and for any of you who haven't done television whatever, let's think of it like this what if you had an outfit to go to brunch with your crew, male or female?

00:20:26.991 --> 00:20:28.773
Or if the dudes you about to go to cigars?

00:20:28.773 --> 00:20:32.517
You got your outfit to go do cigars and play pool with the boys.

00:20:32.517 --> 00:20:44.055
And if you're a chick, you got your brunch outfit, and then, all of a sudden, you find out that there's no brunch and there's no cigars.

00:20:44.055 --> 00:20:49.259
You're going to the White House but the mall is closed.

00:20:49.259 --> 00:20:50.162
You know what I'm saying?

00:20:50.162 --> 00:20:51.065
Like you got to flip.

00:20:51.065 --> 00:20:52.188
You got to flip.

00:20:52.188 --> 00:20:55.285
Who are you talking to, what you talking about and what you wearing.

00:20:56.509 --> 00:21:00.022
They gave me Wardrobe don't do's.

00:21:00.022 --> 00:21:05.384
All of the wardrobe don't do's are my do's.

00:21:05.384 --> 00:21:08.853
Don't wear white.

00:21:08.853 --> 00:21:10.045
Y'all know J Smiles.

00:21:10.045 --> 00:21:11.203
All I wear is white.

00:21:11.203 --> 00:21:13.109
I wear white bottom, white top.

00:21:13.109 --> 00:21:18.509
They might think I'm a white girl by the time I get through putting all that damn white on.

00:21:18.509 --> 00:21:23.634
And no black and no multicolcolored bold prints.

00:21:23.634 --> 00:21:39.788
Anybody who has been to my outside, been open, shows my whole top looks like granimals or a crossword puzzle threw up with me, threw up on me with crayolaola markers.

00:21:39.788 --> 00:21:44.355
I said, damn, that's my whole closet, that's all my gear.

00:21:44.355 --> 00:21:45.641
What am I going to do?

00:21:45.641 --> 00:21:51.313
Still go check on Zeddy, I mean because right now it's about 2 am.

00:21:51.413 --> 00:21:58.702
I got to roll with me on this because I didn't get the call to about two or three in the afternoon, not like it started eight in the morning.

00:21:58.702 --> 00:22:03.252
So I had done all the stuff that don't even matter.

00:22:03.252 --> 00:22:05.221
No more All that stuff.

00:22:05.221 --> 00:22:06.726
Tony, I'm looking at that like shit.

00:22:06.726 --> 00:22:08.290
Why'd I bother do any of that?

00:22:09.599 --> 00:22:13.289
Had to call my brow lady hey, are you in town?

00:22:13.289 --> 00:22:14.132
I need to get threaded.

00:22:14.132 --> 00:22:19.347
Not only she said hey, not only am I not in Atlanta, I'm in Mexico.

00:22:19.347 --> 00:22:22.573
Boo, I need y'all to know.

00:22:22.573 --> 00:22:26.941
Nobody has touched my brows since my daddy died.

00:22:26.941 --> 00:22:32.457
But this lady and she said I'll be back, you know, in three days.

00:22:32.537 --> 00:22:35.142
I was like I'm going to be on TV tomorrow.

00:22:35.142 --> 00:22:43.734
She said, oh shit, okay, she was like my best friend, jay smiles.

00:22:43.734 --> 00:22:45.056
Please go to my best friend.

00:22:45.056 --> 00:22:46.121
This is her information.

00:22:46.121 --> 00:22:47.022
You can trust her.

00:22:47.022 --> 00:22:52.272
She knows that I, you know, I was like what?

00:22:52.452 --> 00:22:56.326
And then I called my nail people and they were like what do you mean?

00:22:56.326 --> 00:22:57.609
It's already three, 30.

00:22:57.609 --> 00:22:58.593
You got to come in today.

00:22:58.593 --> 00:23:01.423
Yes, I have to come in today, I'm going to be on TV tomorrow.

00:23:01.423 --> 00:23:08.069
And they were like you got to come in today, yes, I have to come in today, I'm going to be on TV tomorrow.

00:23:08.069 --> 00:23:09.810
And they were like what?

00:23:09.810 --> 00:23:12.875
Now?

00:23:12.875 --> 00:23:16.238
First of all, you got to understand, and I can, I can feel it in their tone.

00:23:16.238 --> 00:23:30.900
It's like you lying, jake, like if you're supposed to be on TV, you should know before today, you should know before four o'clock the day before.

00:23:30.900 --> 00:23:35.384
Well, maybe, maybe in other people land, in the other people land, it might work that way.

00:23:35.384 --> 00:23:47.165
But in J Smiles comedy, parenting up, caregiving land this is how it's been rolling since the beginning.

00:23:48.688 --> 00:24:13.094
Be flexible and nimble, my child, if not the silver lining or the purple lining, because that's the color for Alzheimer's I got Fifty minutes of sleep, five zero 10 minutes, less than an hour.

00:24:13.094 --> 00:24:26.662
I was nervous, I was worried, I was like, oh my God, my brain is not even going to be awake enough to be witty or to be spontaneous, which is the kind of comedy they wanted.

00:24:26.662 --> 00:24:30.200
Because I asked them is there a theme you want me to talk about or stay away from?

00:24:30.200 --> 00:24:34.667
They said, no, jay, just come in and spitball with the other comedians.

00:24:34.667 --> 00:24:39.542
What I sleep long enough to spitball.

00:24:39.542 --> 00:24:55.554
I told my team I think, ok, I need a Coca-Cola and I need to just kind of get my mind right so that I can clear my mind enough to then allow the universe and the Holy Spirit to just put stuff in it as needed.

00:24:57.895 --> 00:25:01.468
Y'all, I walk into the green room.

00:25:01.468 --> 00:25:04.663
Y'all, I walk into the green room First thing.

00:25:04.663 --> 00:25:07.626
No, I walk into the station.

00:25:07.626 --> 00:25:09.868
I'm walking up the steps.

00:25:09.868 --> 00:25:15.776
The executive producer is coming down the steps and she said I've been looking for you.

00:25:15.776 --> 00:25:24.484
I left my office early to come down and give you a hug.

00:25:24.484 --> 00:25:29.230
What I wish y'all could see my face, where they do that at.

00:25:29.230 --> 00:25:31.152
She said, okay, go ahead to the green room.

00:25:31.152 --> 00:25:32.032
I'm going back upstairs now.

00:25:32.032 --> 00:25:34.935
I just wanted to catch you before you got camera ready.

00:25:34.935 --> 00:25:40.442
I was like, okay, all right.

00:25:40.442 --> 00:25:42.092
Universe, all right, ancestors, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, they really want me here.

00:25:42.092 --> 00:25:43.460
All right, all right, ok, let me do this, let me do this, let me do this.

00:25:43.460 --> 00:25:45.182
I walk into the green room.

00:25:45.182 --> 00:25:48.809
Chase smiles.

00:25:48.809 --> 00:25:50.773
Of course you'll be here.

00:25:50.773 --> 00:25:52.243
Hell yeah, girl.

00:25:52.243 --> 00:25:53.428
What's up, what's up, what's up.

00:25:53.840 --> 00:25:59.032
And it is the biggest love fest with me and comedian Kelly Kells.

00:25:59.032 --> 00:26:04.352
If you don't know her, you're welcome in advance.

00:26:04.352 --> 00:26:09.748
Kelly K-E-L-L-Y, k-e-l-l-z.

00:26:09.748 --> 00:26:14.275
She's phenomenal, full of energy, super positive.

00:26:14.275 --> 00:26:17.323
She's killing it all over the United States.

00:26:17.323 --> 00:26:32.628
She gives me a big hug then and then, um, your fly auntie says I'm y'all's soul roar too.

00:26:32.628 --> 00:26:42.486
I hadn't even met her before, so I don't even know how she whatever, it doesn't matter, because Kelly and I didn't say we were deltas, we just started hugging.

00:26:42.486 --> 00:26:44.021
She said I'm y'all, so right too.

00:26:44.021 --> 00:26:47.511
She all leaned in and she was looking gorgeous and she's a lot taller than me.

00:26:47.511 --> 00:26:48.521
So her lean in.

00:26:48.521 --> 00:26:52.429
You know I was like right, you win, that's big energy.

00:26:52.690 --> 00:27:00.108
And he go, this big ass hug back turns out she has a phenomenal story of overcoming.

00:27:00.108 --> 00:27:03.075
Anyway, look her up.

00:27:03.075 --> 00:27:10.691
But she's out here doing big things, big positive things and making sure that other people know.

00:27:10.691 --> 00:27:17.971
Not only are you not alone, the big thing is, you always have your damn self.

00:27:17.971 --> 00:27:23.900
Her story to me sound like quit looking around for somebody else to come do something for you.

00:27:23.900 --> 00:27:31.599
You got you and figure out whatever it is inside of you that can help you do the thing you need.

00:27:31.599 --> 00:27:34.443
It was pretty amazing.

00:27:35.525 --> 00:27:41.211
I turn, I look around and then I'm like I know so damn well, that can't be her.

00:27:41.211 --> 00:27:42.873
I know.

00:27:42.873 --> 00:27:50.932
So I'm spinning in circles, I'm like I know so damn, that ain't her, the infamous Coco Brown.

00:27:50.932 --> 00:27:56.211
I mean Comic View, tyler Perry, netflix.

00:27:56.211 --> 00:27:58.424
She got a Netflix special, y'all.

00:27:58.424 --> 00:28:02.053
I go to hug her and stand up and she's like I remember you.

00:28:02.053 --> 00:28:03.070
I'm sorry, coco Brown, did you say you remember up?

00:28:03.070 --> 00:28:03.551
And she's like I remember you.

00:28:03.551 --> 00:28:04.845
I'm sorry, coco Brown, did you say you remember me?

00:28:04.845 --> 00:28:07.028
She's like haven't we met?

00:28:07.028 --> 00:28:12.443
I'm like, yeah, I remember when we met, I got the selfies in my phone.

00:28:12.443 --> 00:28:20.707
The point is, you remember me, listen, y'all, she can call Tyler Perry, she can call Oprah.

00:28:20.707 --> 00:28:21.890
Do you understand what I'm saying?

00:28:21.890 --> 00:28:26.307
She could call Jimmy Kimmel, like now.

00:28:26.307 --> 00:28:28.934
And she and she was like, yeah.

00:28:28.974 --> 00:28:42.451
And then she ran down the other comedians that were on the show and I said, yeah, I've been trying to, I've been, I've been wanting to be with you and talk to you and ask questions and mentor you.

00:28:42.451 --> 00:28:43.553
And she was like but what happened?

00:28:43.553 --> 00:28:47.130
I said, well, some of the people that I knew, that knew you, said you were really busy.

00:28:47.130 --> 00:28:51.903
She was like today is the day, yo.

00:28:51.903 --> 00:28:55.549
She started sharing her story with me.

00:28:56.912 --> 00:28:59.141
She was a caregiver for both her parents.

00:28:59.141 --> 00:29:03.972
I didn't know that they now have their wings, both of them.

00:29:03.972 --> 00:29:11.593
She's going to be on the Parenting Up podcast and she's going to be my comedy mentor.

00:29:11.593 --> 00:29:13.262
Look, in that part she offered.

00:29:13.262 --> 00:29:19.886
I didn't even have to force, but I did a little bit kind of say, you know, you got to be on my podcast and she kind of looked.

00:29:19.886 --> 00:29:30.029
I was like okay, anyway, let me tell you what the podcast is, cause I can only imagine how many people have asked Coco Brown and it's C-O-C-O-A Coco.

00:29:30.029 --> 00:29:31.372
There's an A on there.

00:29:31.372 --> 00:29:37.845
I'm talking fast, but just make sure you put an A on there.

00:29:37.845 --> 00:29:39.948
Coco Brown, I can.

00:29:39.948 --> 00:29:45.394
She kills the game and she's a real actor.

00:29:45.394 --> 00:29:49.664
She's an actor and a stand-up comedian.

00:29:49.664 --> 00:29:54.361
She didn't even have to let me finish the conversation but she said well, what's your podcast about?

00:29:54.942 --> 00:29:59.569
The minute I said parenting up, I'm a caregiver, she was like done.

00:29:59.569 --> 00:30:11.028
I was like but let me, I just like says done, and Whoever it was that knows me, that didn't let us meet earlier.

00:30:11.028 --> 00:30:16.086
She said I apologize, don't hold it against them and don't hold it against me.

00:30:16.086 --> 00:30:25.451
I'm not that kind of person and I was like Yo the energy and Kelly Kells that's my soror.

00:30:25.451 --> 00:30:31.990
I've known her for years but I hadn't seen her live in a minute.

00:30:31.990 --> 00:30:34.614
That energy was crazy.

00:30:34.614 --> 00:30:35.621
She was like Jay.

00:30:35.681 --> 00:30:36.365
What are we going to do?

00:30:36.365 --> 00:30:38.434
We need to start talking every day.

00:30:38.434 --> 00:30:40.082
We need to start talking every day.

00:30:40.082 --> 00:30:42.088
We need to build something together.

00:30:42.088 --> 00:30:48.820
Let's make a movie, let's make some skits.

00:30:48.820 --> 00:30:51.784
What are we doing?

00:30:51.784 --> 00:30:54.527
Let's keep each other lifted.

00:30:54.527 --> 00:30:56.989
I'm like bet let's get it.

00:30:57.009 --> 00:31:08.079
And Mr Floyd Y'all know Mr Floyd Smooth, mr Floyd, mr Palmer Williams Jr that man is so freaking funny off the cuff, it's hilarious.

00:31:08.079 --> 00:31:33.494
He is the person that you don't want to sit next to at the opera, in church, at the DMV, anywhere where you're going to get in trouble Because he is going to not, if he, he is going to say something witty, quick and inappropriate about every 37 seconds.

00:31:33.494 --> 00:31:36.267
Shout out to my line sisters, and what you're going to do?

00:31:36.267 --> 00:31:42.250
Nothing, you're going to laugh and he has a poker face looking like I don't know why they laugh and what just happened.

00:31:42.250 --> 00:31:51.102
It was a pleasure to meet him too.

00:31:51.102 --> 00:31:51.702
He was so affable.

00:31:51.702 --> 00:31:58.093
This dude has been in so much stuff on TV and movies, but he was so willing also to mentor and engage me.

00:31:58.093 --> 00:32:01.603
As it turns out, he's been a caregiver.

00:32:03.047 --> 00:32:18.230
I'm going to need y'all to go ahead and if you're driving or you're walking or you're in the shower, just pause for a second and add up how the green room went for me in the first three minutes.

00:32:18.230 --> 00:32:46.178
Oh, no, no, let's add how I walked in and the executive producer came down the steps to personally greet me before I went to the green room and then four people three of them phenomenally successful comedians show love and say they want to do business.

00:32:46.178 --> 00:32:52.087
So I look back over the last 36 hours and I say, okay, how did this all happen?

00:32:52.087 --> 00:32:54.332
Why did it happen?

00:32:54.332 --> 00:32:58.182
Shit, I don't know.

00:32:58.182 --> 00:32:59.866
I don't know.

00:33:01.250 --> 00:33:07.325
But what I do know is this I am a master of showing up.

00:33:07.325 --> 00:33:18.743
I show up, I might be sleepy, I might be late, I might not have any cash on me.

00:33:18.743 --> 00:33:25.574
I have been to Europe twice people with no wallet and no cash.

00:33:25.574 --> 00:33:28.268
How you get all the way to Europe, jade, that's another whole thing.

00:33:28.268 --> 00:33:32.002
But you know, delta got the flyer ready and digital, whatever.

00:33:32.002 --> 00:33:45.200
I showed my passport and they showed my face and got on the thing and I didn't have I mean no money, not one single US dollar bill, not even a debit card, and they don't have cash up in Europe.

00:33:45.200 --> 00:33:45.882
Did y'all know that?

00:33:45.882 --> 00:33:49.931
So nobody couldn't send me nothing.

00:33:49.931 --> 00:33:53.258
So, anyway, I'm gonna show up.

00:33:53.258 --> 00:33:59.669
I might not have any money, I might be late, I might be a little sleepy, but but I'm going to be there.

00:33:59.669 --> 00:34:08.568
And what the universe continuously shows me is, jay, show up and be open, be ready for the opportunity.

00:34:09.451 --> 00:34:15.422
I came here to fulfill the request to be a comedian.

00:34:15.422 --> 00:34:26.596
I turned my professional schedule inside out for another talent's professional schedule.

00:34:26.596 --> 00:34:32.467
Of course it's a great opportunity for me to be on television.

00:34:32.467 --> 00:34:44.704
But let me tell you this If I didn't believe in the Portia show Portia Bruna's brand and her team's brand I don't give a damn about being on TV at all I would have said no.

00:34:44.704 --> 00:34:52.739
I said yes because of what the team stands for, what they've done and what they're building.

00:34:52.739 --> 00:34:55.771
She's done two seasons.

00:34:55.771 --> 00:35:03.797
It's in syndication, I think it's in four or five major cities and I think come season three is going to expand even more.

00:35:04.925 --> 00:35:20.989
The universe patted me on the back and gave me a big warm hug back and gave me a big warm hug.

00:35:20.989 --> 00:35:24.958
I feel like I was seen and I was rewarded for moving on faith.

00:35:24.958 --> 00:35:26.681
Without sight, I ain't have breakfast.

00:35:26.681 --> 00:35:31.856
I did shower because I didn't know how close people were going to be to me and thank God I did because people, we were really tight in that green room.

00:35:33.784 --> 00:35:55.608
So my, I don't even know if I personally have a takeaway, but I wanted to share in real time kind of what a day in the life can feel like and how fast on a dime shit can change for me and it's not even over like and how fast on a dime shit can change for me, and it's not even over.

00:35:55.628 --> 00:36:05.369
My podcast team and I are about to go to our studio and shoot some episodes that you all will see and hear in the next month or so.

00:36:05.369 --> 00:36:12.360
But the caregiving and career balance is real for me.

00:36:12.360 --> 00:36:22.275
Caregiving is the way I honor my mother and I have to always figure out how to make it work.

00:36:22.275 --> 00:36:40.097
But even in honoring her I have to acknowledge myself, my dreams and my hopes, because To not do that it almost would be like slapping my mom in the face.

00:36:40.097 --> 00:36:56.945
She went through too much.

00:36:56.945 --> 00:37:08.724
She did too much for me to not put effort into pursuing what I believe my purpose is here on earth, so every 36 hours doesn't look and feel like this but it's a whole lot more of them than I actually put on video.

00:37:08.764 --> 00:37:22.065
Peace, the snuggle ups.

00:37:22.065 --> 00:37:26.367
Number one don't worry about what you don't know right now.

00:37:26.367 --> 00:37:30.608
When you need to know it, when you have to have it some kind of way, the universe will make sure that it gets done.

00:37:30.608 --> 00:37:31.009
It's amazing.

00:37:31.009 --> 00:37:36.990
The last 36 hours were nuts-ola.

00:37:36.990 --> 00:37:43.333
It was the epitome of my favorite roller coaster ride.

00:37:43.333 --> 00:37:44.393
You get to the top.

00:37:44.393 --> 00:37:49.775
You're like uh-oh, ch-ka-ch-ka, ch-ka-ch-ka, ch-ka-ch-ka.

00:37:49.775 --> 00:37:51.516
That almost sounds like a tutu train.

00:37:51.516 --> 00:37:53.438
But that's me trying to get to the top.

00:37:53.438 --> 00:37:58.099
I'm trying to simulate getting to the top of the roller coaster.

00:37:58.099 --> 00:38:01.221
Then you're up there in anticipation of, oh, my God.

00:38:01.221 --> 00:38:02.900
Then you're on your way down.

00:38:02.900 --> 00:38:08.103
You're like, ah, scared and happy.

00:38:08.103 --> 00:38:09.384
Then you get to the bottom.

00:38:09.384 --> 00:38:11.166
You're like whew, that's over.

00:38:11.166 --> 00:38:16.753
And now you're on your way back up to the top of the next hill With only 50 minutes of sleep.

00:38:18.728 --> 00:38:20.315
The day before me was daunting.

00:38:20.315 --> 00:38:23.313
Would I perform well on the TV show?

00:38:23.313 --> 00:38:24.969
Who all would I meet?

00:38:24.969 --> 00:38:26.130
How would it go down?

00:38:26.130 --> 00:38:27.710
What was going on with Zeddy?

00:38:27.710 --> 00:38:29.050
Would she be okay?

00:38:29.050 --> 00:38:40.054
Would I be able to record all I need to record later in the day for the podcast, for the podcast production?

00:38:40.054 --> 00:38:43.728
Ah Well, it worked.

00:38:43.728 --> 00:38:45.074
It worked out.

00:38:45.074 --> 00:38:53.275
Every five minutes there was a new level of stress or some kind of concern.

00:38:53.275 --> 00:39:12.715
But but that sixth minute, that sixth minute, an answer came in a person, or just in me, letting go of the stress of the need to know yeah, try it.

00:39:14.657 --> 00:39:45.744
Number two nothing replaces having a good team, cannot and will not do life alone, and that goes doubly so as a caregiver.

00:39:45.744 --> 00:39:51.548
My production team came through, so huge.

00:39:51.548 --> 00:40:11.219
They showed up and assisted me on site at the television studio, all the footage we were able to get, and then helping me mentally and emotionally manage.

00:40:11.219 --> 00:40:19.253
But whatever they had to move around in their personal and professional lives with their other clients, I didn't even know about it.

00:40:19.253 --> 00:40:20.976
You know what I mean.

00:40:20.976 --> 00:40:29.500
I didn't get one teeth sucked, one slam of a telephone.

00:40:29.500 --> 00:40:32.152
Hell, you can't even slam a telephone, no more.

00:40:32.152 --> 00:40:34.494
I guess that would have been a mental frustration.

00:40:34.494 --> 00:40:43.195
There was no pushback, everybody just got it done.

00:40:43.195 --> 00:40:55.697
Zeddy's caregiver stepped up, did extra, her trainer did extra.

00:40:55.697 --> 00:41:01.974
Oh, my God, Needing and having a team.

00:41:01.974 --> 00:41:08.045
Oh, you need a team and you need to have a good one.

00:41:08.045 --> 00:41:14.550
So if you got people on your team that are not really helping, you replace them as soon as you can.

00:41:14.550 --> 00:41:21.472
I was even texting my closest friends throughout the day without all this stuff going on and said, oh my God, this happened.

00:41:21.472 --> 00:41:22.976
Oh my God, this happened.

00:41:22.976 --> 00:41:25.690
And they're sending emojis.

00:41:25.690 --> 00:41:26.733
Jay, you got this.

00:41:26.733 --> 00:41:27.956
You can do this.

00:41:27.956 --> 00:41:28.717
You got this.

00:41:28.717 --> 00:41:43.507
Let me tell you about a good team Number three you never know who's watching.

00:41:46.833 --> 00:41:50.719
Mean what you say, say what you mean.

00:41:50.719 --> 00:42:05.005
Keep your brand authentic, true and honest to who you are.

00:42:05.005 --> 00:42:16.425
So when I got the call to be on the television show, it was a phenomenal opportunity.

00:42:16.425 --> 00:42:27.836
But I was able to get a call like that because the producers and executive producers of the show followed me and trusted my brand.

00:42:27.836 --> 00:42:37.123
They trusted what I would do and how I would perform and also what I would not do.

00:42:37.123 --> 00:42:38.288
You know what I mean.

00:42:38.288 --> 00:42:53.259
It's also good that people know what you will not do, what your social media will not have on it and what you will not say or do that could harm their reputation.

00:42:53.259 --> 00:42:57.032
That meant a lot to me.

00:42:57.032 --> 00:43:07.159
It meant a lot to me that they would know that they could trust me to stand in the gap and make it happen.

00:43:07.500 --> 00:43:08.320
That's a big deal.

00:43:12.387 --> 00:43:21.851
When you're good to people and good is relative you know what could be good to me you might think oh damn, Jade, is your bar that low?

00:43:21.851 --> 00:43:28.072
I need people to do way more for me before I would consider that being good.

00:43:28.072 --> 00:43:38.257
My overall perspective on it is everything matters.

00:43:38.257 --> 00:43:42.936
Nothing is so small that it's insignificant.

00:43:42.936 --> 00:43:56.456
So, whatever you're posting, if you text people back, if you see them in the mall, all of those interactions make a difference.

00:43:56.456 --> 00:44:15.505
Yep, and it led to me having a spectacularly impactful and energy-filled day impactful and energy-filled day.

00:44:17.047 --> 00:44:17.971
I could sleep for a week.

00:44:17.971 --> 00:44:19.215
What's up y'all?

00:44:19.215 --> 00:44:29.849
I'm over here just mixing and scratching up stuff and reminding y'all Patreon is open.

00:44:29.849 --> 00:44:35.130

00:44:35.130 --> 00:44:45.153

00:44:45.153 --> 00:44:54.556
J Smile's comedy is dropping with her own little collection within the J Smile Studio Patreon Very, very soon.

00:44:54.556 --> 00:44:59.251
It'll be less than a month, but you want to go on and get in there because there's exclusives.

00:44:59.251 --> 00:45:03.139

00:45:03.139 --> 00:45:15.505
We've already had live broadcasts for people who are already in and I'm going to be honest Because of, you know, branding matters.
